We are what we eat. We are the company we keep. And also, I've come to think, we are what we seek.
What do you seek? What do I seek?
It started with seeking competence. I wanted to be smart. And then friendship, because I was an only child, who was bored after school and craved connection, but also a scared little boy who couldn't deal with the idea that his parents would die someday and he would have no one.
And then passion - I wanted to feel alive and I was young enough to crave intense emotion. And then purpose and popularity, I wanted to make a difference with my life and be a respectable person whose name meant something. Maybe all I really wanted in my twenties was prestige, actually.
And once I met Robyn, I started to seek stability and simplicity - so we could settle into a life together, that could sustain a family.
And now, what is left to seek? What more could there be that's better than that? That is when a man starts to seek peace and unconditional love, the only earthly thing that comes close to being permanent.
Examining "what did I seek when I was little, and what now?" is a deep reflection to take stock, and to reanchor a life. Who we are now and who we are becoming is not based on what we eat, it is based on what we seek.
